About Vi (Vodafone Idea)

Vi is what came out of the 2018 merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, and it remains the third of the three private operators, with roughly twenty crore subscribers.

Its recent history is unusual for a private telco. After years of heavy dues, the government converted spectrum payments into equity and now holds close to 49 percent of the company, which makes it the largest shareholder without it being a public sector firm. Vi started rolling out 5G in 2025, well after Jio and Airtel.
