About Income Tax e-Filing

Individuals and businesses across India file their income tax returns, run by the Income Tax Department. It also holds Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement, the records of what tax has already been deducted against a PAN.

Apart from filing, people use it to e-verify returns, track refunds, respond to notices, link PAN with Aadhaar and file TDS and advance tax details. Chartered accountants work in it all year on behalf of clients.

Load builds enormously in July, ahead of the 31 July due date for individual filers, and again around advance tax dates and audit deadlines later in the year.

If Income Tax e-Filing isn't working

  • Portal slow near the deadline? The e-filing portal is heavily loaded around due dates. Try off peak and avoid hammering refresh, which only slows it further.

  • Not getting the OTP? Use an alternate validation like Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or a pre-validated bank account if the SMS or email OTP is delayed.

  • Use the official portal only Always start from incometax.gov.in. Outdated bookmarks and look-alike sites cause many 'not working' reports.

  • Clear cache or try another browser Stale cookies block login. Use a fresh or incognito window, then try again.

  • Check the live status above If many people across India are reporting Income Tax e-Filing right now, it is a wider problem and not just you.

Other ways to access Income Tax e-Filing

  • File with the Offline Utility From Downloads on the portal you can get the Common Offline Utility or the Excel utility, prepare your ITR offline, and upload only the JSON when the portal is reachable, so heavy load does not block the actual work.

  • Use pre-filled data and finish later Download your pre-filled JSON, keep working in the utility, and submit when the load eases. A part filled online return is auto saved as a draft you can resume.

  • e-Verify by Aadhaar OTP or net banking If the portal OTP is slow, e-verify through Aadhaar OTP or your bank's net banking login instead, so a delayed SMS does not hold up your return.

  • A CA or authorised e-Return Intermediary An authorised e-Return Intermediary or a CA can file on your behalf near a deadline when you cannot reach the portal yourself.

Near filing deadlines it is congestion rather than a full outage. If it is unreachable at an odd time and others are reporting it too, it may be an unplanned outage, which the status above shows.
The reports above are the first check, and the date is the second. The portal slows dramatically in the days before a filing deadline, which is load rather than failure. If login fails with reports quiet, the usual causes are an Aadhaar OTP that never arrives or a PAN not linked to the mobile number on record.
OTP delays are common under load. Switch to Aadhaar OTP or net banking validation, or wait a minute before requesting again to avoid getting locked out.
