About Income Tax e-Filing
Income tax returns in India are filed on the Income Tax e-Filing portal of the Income Tax Department, Government of India, where individuals and businesses also e-verify returns and follow their refunds. The Centralized Processing Centre in Bengaluru processes the returns filed there.
The same portal handles e-Pay Tax, PAN-Aadhaar linking, Instant e-PAN, the Annual Information Statement and responses to notices. Without logging in, anyone can check an ITR's status with its acknowledgement number.

File with the Offline Utility From Downloads on the portal you can get the Common Offline Utility or the Excel utility, prepare your ITR offline, and upload only the JSON when the portal is reachable.

Use pre-filled data and finish later Download your pre-filled JSON, keep working in the offline utility, and upload it when the portal responds again.

e-Verify by Aadhaar OTP or net banking If one e-verification route is slow, use another, such as Aadhaar OTP or your bank's net banking login, so a delayed SMS does not hold up the return.

Questions
Taxpayers across India reporting the income tax portal here at the same time means the portal itself is struggling, not your PAN or browser. With few reports, clear the browser cache or open the site in another browser first.
Login is where most people get stuck: the OTP does not arrive, or the PAN is inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar. If the site is slow or facing a technical issue, prepare the return in the offline utility and upload the JSON once the portal responds.
Wait a minute before asking for another OTP, so you do not get locked out. Check the mobile and email on your profile, or log in through your bank's net banking instead, which opens the e-filing portal without the portal OTP. If the login page itself will not open, clear the cache or try another browser.
Log in and go to e-File, Income Tax Returns, View Filed Returns. Refund processing starts only after the return is e-verified, and the department says the credit usually takes 4-5 weeks. Without logging in, you can still see the ITR status using its acknowledgement number and any valid mobile number.
The department names two common reasons. The PAN may be inoperative because it is not linked with Aadhaar, or the bank account may not be pre-validated, which is now compulsory. Fix whichever applies on the portal.
Offline utility mein return taiyar karke JSON baad mein upload karein, baar baar refresh na karein. OTP na aaye to net banking se login karein. Refund ke liye pehle return e-verify hona zaroori hai.
Keep screenshots showing the portal failure, with the time. Any extension of a due date comes as an official notice from the department, so check its notices before assuming a penalty or a reprieve.
On incometax.gov.in, under Login at the top of the page. Type the address yourself instead of opening a link from a message, so you always land on the department's own site.
