Our automated check runs from one or more locations and may miss in-app problems; reports come from users across India. We only call something "down" when users confirm it too. Here's how we check.

About UPI / NPCI

The National Payments Corporation of India, NPCI, is the umbrella body that runs India's retail payment systems. It was set up by the RBI and the Indian Banks Association, and it is owned by a group of banks rather than by any one company.

Nearly everything an Indian uses for daily money passes through something NPCI operates:

  • UPI, which now handles more than 20 billion transactions in a month

  • RuPay cards and IMPS transfers

  • FASTag on the NETC network

  • AePS, the Aadhaar based cash service used at merchant points

  • Bharat BillPay and the NACH mandates behind EMIs and SIPs

Because it sits underneath every UPI app rather than beside them, load on its rails builds up in the evenings, at month end and on big shopping days across the whole country at once.

If UPI / NPCI isn't working

  • Money debited but payment failed? Do not retry right away. A failed UPI debit is auto reversed to the source account, usually within a few hours to 3 working days. Check your statement first.

  • Try a different UPI app or bank A UPI failure is often at one bank or app, not the whole network. Switch to another UPI app or a different bank account to pay.

  • Check the receiver's bank too Some failures are on the receiving bank side. If one payee keeps failing, try a different payee or method.

  • Is every UPI app failing? If Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm all fail together, it is an NPCI or network level issue, so waiting it out is the only option.

  • Check the live status above If many people across India are reporting UPI / NPCI right now, it is a wider problem and not just you.

Other ways to access UPI / NPCI

  • Switch to a different bank account If one bank is declining UPI, pay from another bank's account or app, since the issue is often one bank, not all of UPI.

  • Try a different UPI app If only one app is failing, another UPI app on the same account may work. If every app fails, it is the UPI network itself.

  • Pay by card, net banking or IMPS For a bank to bank transfer when UPI is down, use a card, net banking or IMPS instead.

  • Keep some cash for network-wide outages When UPI is down across all banks and apps, cash is the only fallback for small payments.

Questions

No. A failed UPI transaction is auto reversed to the source account, usually within a few hours and up to 3 working days. Keep the reference or RRN number as proof.
This page tracks the shared network every app sits on, so a spike here means GPay, PhonePe, Paytm and the rest are all affected together. If only one app is failing for you, the problem is that app or your own bank rather than UPI itself, and paying from a second bank account proves which.
A UPI problem is often limited to one bank or app, not the whole network. Trying another app or a different bank account is usually the fastest workaround.
If Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm are all failing together, the issue is at the NPCI or network level, not one app. The report map above shows how wide it is.
Dusra bank account ya dusri UPI app try karein. Agar paise cut gaye par payment fail hua to ghabraye nahi, failed payment wapas aa jata hai. Reference number sambhal kar rakhein.
The credit is often just pending on the receiving bank side and settles on its own, else it is auto reversed to you. Keep the reference number and raise a complaint if it is not resolved in a few days.
The bank server may be down or you may have hit a daily UPI limit. Try another account, or retry after some time.
Yes, banks cap the number and amount of UPI payments per day. Hitting that limit looks like a failure even though nothing is down.
Yes. Tap the Download button on the live status card at the top of this page to save the UPI server down image. The screenshot shows UPI's current status, the last checked time and how many users across India are reporting problems right now. So when UPI is actually down you get a real service down screenshot, not a mock-up. Save the service down image to keep it or send it to someone.
We run an on demand check from our server and combine it with real user reports across India. Reports are the main signal, since UPI can fail across apps while individual app servers still respond.
