About Google Pay

Google Pay, also called GPay and once known as Tez, is Google's UPI payments app in India. It is provided by Google India Digital Services Private Limited and works with every bank that supports BHIM UPI, so money moves straight between the two bank accounts.

People use it to pay shops by QR, send money to contacts, and pay recharges and bills. It also offers the Flex by Google Pay credit card and personal loans from lending partners. Payments leave your bank over UPI, so a problem at your bank can stop a payment even when the app opens fine.

If Google Pay isn't working

Payment failed but money debited? Do not retry straight away. The bank may debit first and refund after, and the RBI turnaround for that refund is T+1. Keep the UPI reference ID and contact your bank with it if the money does not return.
'Bank server down' or 'unable to connect to bank'? This is your bank, not Google Pay. Switch to a second linked bank account or wait for the bank to recover. Adding two banks avoids this in future.
UPI PIN not working? You may be entering the old PIN or your ATM PIN. Three wrong tries in 24 hours block UPI payments for a while. Reset the UPI PIN with your debit card.
App not opening or stuck? Update Google Pay, clear its cache and check your connection. If many users report it here, it is a Google Pay or UPI network issue.
Payment declined or over the limit? Your bank sets the UPI limit on your account. For a large amount, use net banking, IMPS or your card instead.
Check the live reports If many people across India are reporting Google Pay right now, it is a wider problem. Wait, or switch to another bank or app rather than retrying.

Other ways to access Google Pay

Switch to a second linked bank account If one bank's server is down, pay from another bank inside Google Pay. Linking two accounts is the simplest fix for bank side outages.
Use another UPI app The same bank account works in PhonePe, Paytm or your bank's own app if GPay itself is down.
Pay by card or net banking for big amounts For an amount above your bank's UPI limit, or while UPI itself is failing, pay with your card or through net banking IMPS.
Pay to the receiver's other UPI, or cash If the receiver's bank is the one down, pay to a different UPI ID of theirs, or use cash for a small amount.
Payment helpline For a debit that has not come back, the verified Google Pay helpline has the toll-free number and chat hours.

Look at the reports from GPay users on this page. If many people report at once, Google Pay or the UPI network has a problem. If only your payments fail, try a second linked bank account, or check with your bank.

Check the message on screen. Payments here run straight between banks over UPI, so when your bank's server is unavailable a transfer fails even though Google Pay opens. Pick a second linked account at the payment screen, or wait for your bank to recover.

That error is your bank's server, not Google Pay. In India, Google Pay is direct bank to bank UPI, so if your bank is down the payment fails. Try a different bank account in the app, or wait for the bank to recover.

Yes. When a UPI payment fails, your bank may debit the money first and then refund it, so you can get two SMSes. The RBI turnaround for a failed UPI debit is T+1, one working day after the payment. Keep the UPI reference ID from the app. If it has not come back, contact your bank with that ID, then raise it in Google Pay.
