About UIDAI / Aadhaar

Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), and the work residents actually do with it happens on the myAadhaar portal and the Aadhaar app: download an e-Aadhaar, update a document, check an update's status, order a PVC card, generate a VID, lock the number or check bank seeding.

Almost every one of those depends on an OTP reaching the phone number recorded inside your Aadhaar, which is why a failure here often has nothing to do with the site being down.

Because banks, SIM cards, PAN and scheme payments all lean on Aadhaar, a bad hour on this portal holds up a great deal else.

If UIDAI / Aadhaar isn't working

Start the service again from the top A half finished form is the commonest reason for an error at the end. Go back to myAadhaar and begin that service fresh.
Check which number the OTP goes to It is the mobile number inside your Aadhaar, not the one in your hand. An old number can be changed in the Aadhaar app or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Pick a service that does not need an OTP Update status, PVC order status, appointment booking, the centre locator and grievance filing all run without one.
Try the Aadhaar app instead of the browser UIDAI's own app carries the same services, and one of the two usually responds when the other will not.
Book the Seva Kendra slot online Name, date of birth, biometric and email changes happen at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Book the appointment on myAadhaar first; that step needs no OTP.

Other ways to access UIDAI / Aadhaar

Use the Aadhaar app UIDAI's app does downloads, the QR and everyday verification from the phone, without opening the portal at all.
Go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra Biometric, name and date of birth updates are done in person. The locator on myAadhaar finds the nearest centre and the portal books the appointment.
Use the copy you already have A previously downloaded e-Aadhaar stays valid, and its QR can be verified offline, so an outage today need not stop a KYC today.
File it rather than retry it If a service fails all day, a grievance on the portal needs no OTP, and the Aadhaar helpline contacts take the same complaint by phone or email.

Questions

Check the user reports on this page. Many reports from different states at once mean UIDAI is facing a technical issue. If it is only you, the usual block is the OTP step: the code goes only to the mobile number recorded in your Aadhaar.

Look at which step failed. The site itself can be slow, but most reports come from services that need an OTP on the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar, and that check runs on a different system. Services that need no OTP, such as update status or booking an appointment, show whether the portal itself is up.

Check whose number it is going to. The OTP goes only to the mobile number recorded in the Aadhaar itself, so an old number means no OTP at all. That number can be changed in the Aadhaar app or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, for a Rs 75 fee. Meanwhile several things still work without it: enrolment or update status, PVC card order status, booking an appointment, checking Aadhaar validity and filing a grievance.

Usually a passing technical issue on the portal, not a problem with your Aadhaar. Wait a few minutes and start the service again from the beginning rather than refreshing a half finished form. If it repeats all day, file it as a grievance, which does not need an OTP.
