Every GST registered business in India files through this one system, operated by GSTN. Registration, monthly and quarterly returns, tax payment, refunds and input tax credit reconciliation all happen here.

It became busier still after September 2025, when the GST Council moved most goods into two main slabs of 5 and 18 percent, dropping the old 12 and 28 percent brackets, and businesses had to reclassify their items.

Filing deadlines are what shape its traffic, GSTR-1 around the 11th and GSTR-3B around the 20th of each month, when lakhs of taxpayers and their accountants file within the same few hours.

If GST Portal isn't working

Filing near a deadline? The GST portal slows under deadline load. Retry in an off peak window instead of refreshing repeatedly, which only adds to the congestion.
DSC or emSigner errors? Make sure the emSigner utility is running and your DSC drivers are installed. Restart emSigner and the browser if signing fails.
Clear cache and captcha issues A fresh or incognito window clears stale cookies that block login and captcha on the GST portal.
Use the official portal only Always start from gst.gov.in. Outdated bookmarks and look-alike sites cause many 'not working' reports.

Other ways to access GST Portal

Prepare returns with the Offline Tools From Downloads then Offline Tools on the portal, you can fill GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and others offline and upload only the JSON once the portal is reachable, so peak load slowness does not stop your data prep.
File through a GSP or accounting software Many businesses file via a GST Suvidha Provider or accounting software that connects to the GST system, which can still work when the portal front end is struggling.
A GST practitioner or Suvidha Kendra A GST practitioner or a nearby GST Suvidha Kendra can complete an urgent filing for you when you cannot reach the portal yourself.
E-way bill and e-invoice are separate portals If you only need an e-way bill or an e-invoice, those run on their own portals and often stay up even when the main GST return portal is down.

Millions file in the final days, so the servers throttle requests. That shows up as slowness and errors rather than a clean outage. An off peak retry, early morning or late night, usually works.

Make sure the emSigner utility is running as admin and your DSC token drivers are installed. Restart emSigner and the browser. If signing fails for many users together, it may be a portal side issue.
