IRCTC is the only authorised place to book Indian Railways tickets online, run as a listed company under the Ministry of Railways, through its website and the Rail Connect app.

Besides ticketing it handles railway catering, packaged drinking water and tourism packages, and it sells travel insurance and tour products alongside.

Tatkal booking opens one day before the journey, at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC, and the site takes no bookings between 11:45 PM and 12:20 AM each night.

If IRCTC isn't working

Payment failed but money debited? Do not rebook straight away. Money for a failed booking goes back to the source account, though IRCTC notes banks set the timing. Check the transaction in your account first.
Tatkal errors at 10 to 11 AM? Tatkal opens at 10 AM for AC and 11 AM for non-AC. Pre-save passenger and payment details so the booking goes through faster.
Switch between website and Rail Connect app When the website stalls, open the Rail Connect app, and the other way round. Keep both logged in before a Tatkal window.
Pay with a UPI app you know is working If checkout keeps failing, switch to another UPI app or bank. The failure is sometimes on the payment side rather than at IRCTC.
Check your connection A weak network drops Tatkal sessions mid booking. Use a stable connection and avoid switching networks while paying.
Check the live status above If reports are spiking nationwide, the problem is at IRCTC and not just you. Wait a few minutes before retrying.

Book outside the Tatkal opening minutes If your journey allows, book a normal ticket away from the 10 AM and 11 AM Tatkal openings.
Railway reservation counter for urgent travel For an urgent ticket when IRCTC is down, a railway PRS counter can book it. Tatkal at counters needs an OTP on the mobile number you give.
Pay with a UPI app you know is working If the payment step keeps failing, switch to a UPI app that is working so the booking is not lost at the last moment.
Helpline for a stuck booking Call the verified IRCTC helpline when a booking fails or a ticket does not confirm after the payment has gone through.

Tatkal booking opens at 10 AM for AC and 11 AM for non-AC, and everyone booking Tatkal for the next day starts at that same moment, which is when payment errors and dropped sessions get reported. Late at night there is a second reason: online booking pauses every day from 11:45 PM to 12:20 AM.

Online booking on IRCTC runs from 12:20 AM to 11:45 PM IST every day, Sundays included. So from 11:45 PM to 12:20 AM the site does not book tickets, which is why the IRCTC website stops working at the same time every night. Booking for a train's opening day starts only at 8 AM. IRCTC says these hours can change without notice. This nightly pause is the railway server down time most people are asking about, and it is planned, not an outage.

Everyone books at the same moment. Tatkal for a train opens at one fixed time the day before, 10 AM for AC and 11 AM for non-AC. Since 1 July 2025 only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal online, so link Aadhaar to your IRCTC account well before the day. A Tatkal e-ticket takes at most four passengers.

No. Money for a failed booking goes back to the card or bank account it came from. IRCTC says the timing depends on the banks involved, so check the transaction in your IRCTC account before paying again, and raise it on the IRCTC eQuery portal if it does not return.
