About IRCTC

IRCTC is the only authorised place to book Indian Railways tickets online, run as a listed company under the Ministry of Railways. Almost every reserved train ticket in the country is issued through its website or Rail Connect app, either directly or through agents who sit on top of it.

Besides ticketing it handles railway catering, packaged drinking water and tourism packages, and it sells travel insurance and tour products alongside.

Its hardest minutes are fixed and well known, the Tatkal booking windows at 10 AM and 11 AM, when lakhs of people hit the same few trains at once. Festival seasons, Diwali, Chhath and the summer holidays, stretch that load across whole weeks.

If IRCTC isn't working

Payment failed but money debited? Do not rebook immediately. IRCTC auto refunds failed bookings to the source account, usually within 3 to 7 working days. Check My Transactions first.
Tatkal errors at 10 to 11 AM? The Tatkal window packs millions into a few minutes, so the system throttles requests. This is overload, not a full outage, so pre-save passenger and payment details to book faster.
Switch between website and Rail Connect app When one is congested the other often still works. Keep both logged in during peak booking windows.
Pay with a UPI app you know is working Many IRCTC failures are actually on the payment bank side. Using a healthy UPI app or bank avoids most checkout errors.
Check your connection A weak network drops Tatkal sessions mid booking. Use a stable connection and avoid switching networks while paying.
Check the live status above If reports are spiking nationwide, IRCTC is overloaded and it is not just you. Wait a few minutes before retrying.

Other ways to access IRCTC

Use the IRCTC Rail Connect app If the website is not loading, the official IRCTC Rail Connect app often works, and vice versa. Switching between them is the quickest workaround.
Try off-peak, not at the Tatkal rush Outside the 10 to 11 AM Tatkal window the site is far lighter, so a normal booking goes through more easily.
Authorised agents for urgent travel For an urgent ticket when IRCTC is down, an authorised railway booking agent or counter can be a fallback.
Pay with a UPI app you know is working If the payment step keeps failing, switch to a UPI app that is working so the booking is not lost at the last moment.
