About EPFO

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation runs the retirement savings of India's formal sector workforce, crores of members whose employers deduct PF from salary every month. Its member portal is where all of that is visible.

Members log in with their UAN to check the passbook, see whether the employer has deposited, transfer an account after changing jobs, file withdrawal or advance claims and track pension under EPS. Employers use a separate portal to file monthly contributions.

It is busiest just after monthly contributions are credited, after the annual interest is posted, and in job-change season when transfer and withdrawal claims pile up together.

If EPFO isn't working

  • Passbook not opening? It is busiest at peak hours and month end. Try an off-peak time, or use the UMANG app for the same passbook.

  • UAN login failing? This is usually load, not a blocked UAN. Reset via Forgot Password, clear the cache, or try Firefox.

  • OTP not coming? It goes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Check your KYC is approved and DND is not blocking the SMS.

  • Check balance without the portal Give a missed call from your UAN-registered mobile, or send the balance SMS, to get your PF balance.

  • Claim rejected? The reason is recorded in your passbook view. Fix that before refiling, or the same claim will be rejected again.

  • Check the live status above If many people are reporting EPFO, especially at month end, it is a wider issue and not just you.

Other ways to access EPFO

  • Check PF balance by missed call or SMS Both work from your UAN-registered mobile without the portal, so you can get your balance even when the site is down.

  • Use the UMANG app for passbook and claims UMANG is a different route to the same EPFO services and often works when the passbook site is slow.

  • Try off-peak hours Early morning or late evening avoids the peak-hour and month-end load.

  • Raise a grievance or use the helpline For a genuinely stuck claim, use the EPFO grievance system or the verified EPFO helpline. Filing during an outage will not speed up load, though.
