About PhonePe

PhonePe is the most used UPI app in India, handling close to half of all UPI transactions in the country month after month. It is headquartered in Bengaluru, majority owned by Walmart, and it moved its holding company from Singapore to India in 2022.

People use it to pay shops by QR, send money, recharge, pay bills and buy insurance or gold, while merchants use its QR stickers and soundboxes to accept payments. Its reach runs to crores of registered users and merchants in almost every pin code, so a fault on its side is felt at kirana counters and petrol pumps at the same time.

Traffic is heaviest in the evening and on weekends, at month end and during festival and sale weeks, when both shopping and money transfers pick up together.

If PhonePe isn't working

Payment stuck or failed? Check your transaction history and bank statement before retrying on PhonePe. A failed debit is auto reversed within a few working days, so do not pay twice.
Switch to another UPI app If PhonePe is failing, the same UPI account usually works in another app for an urgent payment.
Re-login or update the app A stale session causes 'something went wrong' errors. Update PhonePe and sign in again.
Check your bank's side too Many PhonePe failures are actually a bank or PSP issue. Try a different linked bank account before assuming PhonePe is down.
Check the live status above If many people across India are reporting PhonePe right now, it is a wider problem and not just you.

Other ways to access PhonePe

Switch to a second linked bank account If one bank's server is down, pay from another bank inside PhonePe. Adding two accounts is the simplest fix for bank side outages.
Use another UPI app The same bank account works in Google Pay, Paytm or your bank's own app if PhonePe itself is down.
Pay by card or net banking for big amounts For an amount over the UPI limit, or when UPI is down, use your card or net banking IMPS.
Pay to the receiver's other UPI, or cash If the receiver's bank is the one down, pay to a different UPI ID of theirs, or use cash for a small amount.

Yes. A failed UPI payment is auto reversed to your account, usually within a few hours and up to 3 working days. Keep the transaction reference and do not pay again before checking your statement.

The report map above is the first thing to read. A sharp national rise means PhonePe or the wider UPI network is struggling and waiting is the only sensible move. If reports are quiet, the fault is narrower, usually your own bank declining rather than PhonePe itself, since a UPI payment passes through both. Trying the same payment from a second bank account settles which one it is in seconds.

Many times it is one bank or PSP that is failing, not all of PhonePe. The quickest workaround is to try another linked bank account, or pay from a different UPI app.

It is usually a stale session or heavy server load. Update the app and re-login. If a lot of users are reporting PhonePe above at the same time, then it is a PhonePe side issue and not your phone.
