About BHIM

Bharat Interface for Money, better known as BHIM, is the UPI app that NPCI built itself. It is now run by NPCI BHIM Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary set up in 2024.

Money moves straight between bank accounts, by UPI ID, mobile number or QR, with no wallet in the middle. Beyond plain payments the app carries UPI LITE for small offline payments, UPI AUTOPAY mandates, bill payments, IPO applications and UPI Global.

Every payment is checked by your own bank through NPCI, and the app keeps a Report Issue route on each transaction. BHIM allows up to Rs 40,000 per transaction and per day for each linked bank account.

If BHIM isn't working

Report the payment inside the app Open the entry on the Transaction page and use Report Issue, choosing Failed Transaction. That is BHIM's own route and it carries the details with it.
Check the SIM, not just the signal Registration and UPI PIN checks send a message from the phone itself. The registered number has to be the active SIM in that handset.
Bank missing from the list? Wait and try again later rather than removing the account, or link a different bank account meanwhile.
Pay from another app or account The same bank account works in any UPI app, and a second bank account gets round a problem at your first bank.
Never repeat a failed payment straight away The first one may still be in flight. Check the statement before sending it again.
Compare with other users' reports Reports arriving from many users at once point at BHIM or the UPI network, not at your handset.

Other ways to access BHIM

Use *99# when data fails The *99# service runs UPI over a plain call menu with no internet at all, which covers a balance check or a small transfer when the app will not load.
Pay from another UPI app Your bank account is not tied to BHIM. Any UPI app on the same account will pay, and the UPI PIN stays the same.
UPI LITE for small amounts Money kept in UPI LITE inside the app pays without the UPI PIN and without waiting on the bank for each payment.
Chase a stuck payment properly Report Issue first, then your bank with the transaction ID. The BHIM support contacts hold the toll-free number and the support email for when neither settles it.

BHIM users' reports here answer it. A burst from many places at once means BHIM or the UPI network behind it has a technical issue or downtime. If only a few come in, the trouble is more likely at your own bank's end of the payment.

Within about three days, by BHIM's own answer. It says the amount sits in the remitting bank's pool account and is reversed in T+3 days. Use Report Issue on that entry on the Transaction page, pick Failed Transaction and give the details. Quote the transaction ID to your bank as the reference, and do not send the money again meanwhile.

Leave it alone and report it. BHIM says a pending payment is held in the beneficiary bank's pool account, that the same Report Issue route on the Transaction page covers it, and that the money comes back in about three days if it does not go through. A second attempt only creates a second payment to chase.

Both come from the bank end. The mobile number in the phone must be the one registered with that bank account, with a working SIM in the handset for the verification message. If the PIN keeps failing, set it again with your debit card details rather than retrying the old one. If your bank does not show, try again later or link another account.

Turant dobara mat bhejein. BHIM kehta hai ki failed payment ka paisa bank ke pool account me rukta hai aur teen din me wapas aata hai. Transaction page par us entry par Report Issue dabakar Failed Transaction chunein, aur transaction ID apne bank ko dein.

No, and BHIM says so plainly: a completed payment cannot be reversed, because NPCI only carries the transaction. What you can do is send that person a collect request for the same amount and ask them to return it, and tell your bank at once so the attempt is on record. Check the name shown against a UPI ID before paying next time.
