About BHIM

BHIM, short for Bharat Interface for Money, is NPCI's own UPI app. Since NPCI runs the UPI network itself, BHIM sits about as close to the core of the system as an app can.

It pays and receives money straight between bank accounts using a UPI ID, mobile number or QR code, with no wallet in between, and it supports a number of Indian languages. It was launched to make plain, direct UPI payments easy for first time users, and it stays popular for exactly that reason even though its share of overall UPI volume is small next to the big apps.

If BHIM isn't working

For a failed payment, keep the RRN A failed UPI payment is auto reversed. Note the UPI reference (RRN) and wait, rather than sending again.
Check if it is one bank or all of UPI If only your bank is declining, pay from another bank. If every UPI app fails, it is a network-wide UPI issue and only a wait helps.
Re-check your UPI PIN and linked bank Confirm the linked bank is active and re-register the UPI PIN if it keeps failing.
Use the DigiSaathi helpline for disputes For a stuck payment, NPCI's DigiSaathi helpline is the official UPI dispute route across apps and banks.
Check the live status above If many people across India are reporting BHIM right now, it is a wider problem and not just you.

Other ways to access BHIM

Try a different UPI app If only BHIM is failing, the same bank account works in another UPI app. If all fail, it is the UPI network itself.
Switch to a different bank account If one bank is declining, pay from another bank, since the issue is often one bank, not all of UPI.
Pay by card, net banking or IMPS For a bank-to-bank transfer when UPI is down, use a card, net banking or IMPS instead.
DigiSaathi helpline for UPI disputes For a debited but not received payment, use NPCI's DigiSaathi via the BHIM helpline page.

Yes, a failed UPI payment is auto reversed, usually within a few hours and up to a couple of working days. Keep the UPI reference (RRN) and do not repeat the payment before checking your statement.

Because BHIM sits close to the UPI network, a failure can be the app, your bank, or UPI more broadly. If every UPI app is failing it is network-wide, if only BHIM is, try another app on the same account.
