You need an account to create a profile, but it can be either Instagram or Facebook. Anyone with one of the two can set up a Threads profile, which stays connected to that account.

In Threads, open your profile, tap Menu, then Accounts Centre, Personal details, Account ownership and control, and Deactivation or deletion. Deleting Threads does not delete your Instagram or Facebook account, and it becomes final after 30 days.

Threads signs you in through the Instagram or Facebook account linked to your profile. If that login fails, fix it on Instagram or Facebook first, then open Threads again.
