About Protean PAN

Protean eGov Technologies, known for years as NSDL e-Governance, is one of the two agencies the Income Tax Department has appointed to process PAN applications. This is its PAN portal.

People apply for a new PAN here, make corrections to name or date of birth, reprint a card, download an e-PAN and check where an application has reached.

It gets crowded near tax filing dates and whenever a PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline approaches.

If Protean PAN isn't working

Wait and retry near deadlines Close to PAN-Aadhaar linking and tax dates the portal is overloaded. Wait a few minutes and retry rather than refreshing constantly.
For a failed payment, keep the reference A failed PAN fee is normally auto reversed. Keep the reference and check your status before paying again, so you do not apply twice.
Keep your acknowledgement or PAN ready Have your 15-digit acknowledgement number or PAN, name and date of birth ready before you open the page.
Use the correct portal Check your acknowledgement to see if it is Protean PAN or the other agency, and use that portal, so you are not on the wrong one.
Check the live status above If many people are reporting Protean PAN right now, it is a wider problem and not just you.

Other ways to access Protean PAN

Try the other official route PAN services also run through UTIITSL and the Income Tax e-filing site (for instant e-PAN via Aadhaar), so an alternate official route may work.
Try in off-peak hours Protean PAN is much faster late at night or early morning, away from deadline-day load.
Visit a PAN service centre For a stuck application, an authorised PAN facilitation centre can help in person.

Check the live status and report map above. Protean PAN is one of the two official PAN portals. If reports are spiking, especially near a PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline, it is a wider problem and not just you.

PAN work is split between Protean and UTIITSL, and applications made through one cannot be tracked on the other, which accounts for a fair share of failed status checks. If the reports above are quiet and your acknowledgement is recent, give it a day or two to become searchable.

Close to linking and tax deadlines a huge number of people use Protean PAN together, so it slows down or errors out for a while. It is the load, not your application.

Do not apply again immediately. A failed payment is normally auto reversed within a few working days. Keep the transaction reference and check your application status before paying again.

Use the one your acknowledgement or application went through. Protean PAN handles its own applications; UTIITSL handles the ones made on its portal. Check your acknowledgement slip for the agency.
