It has grown a long way past plain text, with image understanding, voice, file analysis and web search folded in, across a free tier and paid plans.

It is one of the most used AI tools in the world, running as a single global service. That scale is why capacity messages can appear at busy hours, and why a fault on OpenAI's side tends to reach users everywhere at the same moment.

If ChatGPT isn't working

Start a new chat or refresh Reload the page or app and start a new chat. If a response stops midway, resend it, and signing out and back in clears many temporary glitches.
Check if it is a limit or capacity On free plans there are usage limits, and at peak hours ChatGPT can be at capacity. Wait a bit and retry, or switch to another model if you can. It is load, not your device.
Check your connection Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and turn off any VPN or proxy, since these can block ChatGPT.

Use another AI tool for now Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Copilot can usually do the same task while ChatGPT is down, so your work need not stop.
