About NSDL Payments Bank

A wholly owned arm of NSDL, the depository that has held Indian shares in dematerialised form since 1996, this payments bank commenced operations in October 2018. The pitch leans on the parent's name rather than a branch network.

Everything runs through the NSDL Jiffy app, a zero balance digital savings account opened with Aadhaar and PAN, a free virtual RuPay card, UPI, recharges and bill payments. Being a payments bank it takes deposits but cannot lend, so there are no loans or credit cards of its own.

Video KYC is the pinch point. Accounts stay on a reduced transaction limit until it is completed, and can be put on hold if it lapses, which accounts for a good share of the access problems customers run into.

Most often video KYC. Accounts run on a reduced limit until VKYC is done and can be put on hold if it is left pending, which is not an outage and will not clear by itself. Completing the VKYC slot in the app is what releases it.
