About Chess.com

Players across India and the world use Chess.com to play live and daily chess online, solve puzzles, take lessons and review their games. It runs in the browser and in the Chess.com app for Android and iPhone.

Most live games now run on the Realtime Chess Network, which has a server group in Mumbai alongside the US and Europe. When Chess.com has trouble, live games can freeze, disconnect or get aborted, and login may fail.

Questions

This page's status card shows our last check of chess.com and how many players are reporting problems. If many players report at once, the fault is with Chess.com, not your board.

It may be a planned server restart. Chess.com restarts its servers about once a week, usually between 1 AM and 3 AM Pacific Time, which is mid-afternoon in India. A banner warns 40 minutes ahead, and the break lasts a few minutes.

Live games running at that moment are aborted, with no rating change. Daily games are not affected.

Live games run on the Realtime Chess Network, which includes a server group in Mumbai. Chess.com says most drops happen on the internet route between you and its servers, so start with your side:
  • Use Wi-Fi or a wired connection instead of mobile data, close to the router.
  • Pause downloads, video and music while you play.
  • Clear the browser cache and turn off extensions.

Do a hard refresh first: Ctrl + F5 on a PC, Command + R on a Mac. If the board still fails, clear the browser cache, update the browser, and turn off extensions that may block the page.

On Android, tap and hold the app icon, open App info, then Storage & cache, and clear cache and storage. Note your username and password first, as this logs you out. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app; it needs iOS 16.4 or later.

  • Forgot the password: request a reset from the login page and check spam for the email.
  • 'Invalid login token detected' on Android: close the app and open it again.
  • Error code RG45 or RP13: a restriction on your account or IP address. Contact Support with your IP address and any earlier usernames.
