About Visa

Visa is a global card payment network that links cardholders, shops and banks in more than 200 countries and territories. In India, banks issue Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards, and Visa carries the payment between the shop and the bank.

Visa does not hold your card account. Your bill, balance, limits, declines and disputes are all handled by the bank that issued the card, while Visa runs a freephone line in India for lost and stolen cards.

Check reports from other banks Failures across many banks mean Visa. Failures from your bank only mean the bank.
Check card settings in your bank app Turn on online, contactless or international use if a payment of that kind is being declined.
Try the payment again later Wait a few minutes and pay again. A brief timeout at the bank or shop clears this way.
Call the number on the card Your bank can see the decline reason and lift a security block.

Pay by UPI or another card If Visa payments are failing everywhere, pay straight from your bank account on UPI or use a card on another network.
Use a different checkout Online, try the store's app instead of the website, or switch to net banking.

Two signals help: cardholder reports logged here, and our running check of visa.co.in. When Visa cardholders from several banks report failures in the same hour, the trouble is with the Visa network. Reports from one bank alone point to that bank.

A wide Visa outage shows as many reports from different banks together. Wait a few minutes, then pay again.

If only your card fails, ring your bank's card helpline. Visa itself says the issuing bank is best placed to give the exact decline reason.

Only your bank can tell you the exact reason. It may be a limit reached, online or international use switched off, a wrong PIN or OTP, or a security block. Call the bank on the number printed on the card.

Contact your bank. Cardholders do not register for 3-D Secure (formerly Verified by Visa); the issuing bank runs that check, so the bank fixes it when it fails.

Ask your bank, or try adding the card in your UPI app. UPI is run by NPCI, and NPCI's RuPay network promotes RuPay credit cards on UPI. Whether a Visa card can be added depends on your bank and app.

Shops showing the Visa logo are not allowed to refuse a Visa card from a genuine customer. Visa's rules generally bar a minimum or maximum amount too, with an exception only in the USA and some US territories. Report a problem shop to your bank.

Some banks block an estimated amount until the final bill comes through. Visa requires banks to remove such holds within 72 hours, and most clear in under 24 hours. Your bank can explain a hold that stays longer.
