About American Express India
American Express holds a banking licence in India as American Express Banking Corp, but it does not work like the other banks it sits beside. There are no branches and no savings accounts. The business is credit and charge cards run out of a Gurgaon head office, and everything a customer does happens in the Amex app or the online account.
Cardmembers deal in statements, payments, Membership Rewards points and disputes rather than balances and transfers, so there is no UPI and no net banking in the usual sense. Acceptance is also narrower than Visa or Mastercard, which means a declined card is often the merchant not taking Amex rather than anything wrong at the issuer.
