UPI Payment Failed but Money Debited? How to Get It Back

· · 8 min read

Do not make the payment again. If your UPI payment failed and the money was debited, that amount is supposed to come back on its own, usually in a few minutes and by the end of the next day at the latest. If it takes longer than that, your bank owes you ₹100 for every extra day, and it is supposed to pay that without you asking for it.

That is the short version. The longer version matters because three completely different things get described as "UPI payment failed", and each one has a different route to your money.

First work out which of the three things happened

Open the app and look at the transaction status before you do anything else.

Pending. The payment has not resolved yet. Since NPCI cut UPI response times to 10 to 15 seconds in June 2025, true pending states are rarer than they used to be, and most sort themselves out within the hour. Tap Check Status in the app rather than paying again.

Failed, money debited. This is the case the guide is mainly about, and what most people mean when they say a UPI payment failed. Your account was debited, the receiver got nothing, and the amount has to come back to you. This is covered by RBI rules and there are hard timelines attached.

Successful, but the receiver says nothing came. Different problem. Check with the receiver again, because credit alerts sometimes lag, and confirm you sent it to the right UPI ID. If the money genuinely went to the wrong person, that is a wrong-transfer complaint, not a failed one.

There is a fourth case that people wrongly file under this heading, and it is important to separate. If money left your account because somebody on a phone call talked you into approving a request or sharing an OTP, that is fraud, not a failed transaction. The rules below do not apply and the clock is much tighter. Our guide on fake customer care numbers covers what to do, and the short answer is call 1930 straightaway.

What the RBI rules actually promise you

When a UPI payment failed and the amount is stuck, there is a framework that covers you, and most people have no idea it exists. It comes from an RBI circular issued on 20 September 2019, Harmonisation of Turn Around Time and customer compensation for failed transactions, and it sets a hard deadline for every kind of payment failure.

What happened

Deadline to reverse

Compensation if late

UPI: account debited, beneficiary not credited

Auto reversal by the beneficiary bank, latest by T+1 day

₹100 per day beyond T+1

IMPS or card-to-card: debited, not credited

T+1 day

₹100 per day beyond T+1

Card at a shop (PoS): debited, no charge slip

T+5 days

₹100 per day beyond T+5

ATM: debited, cash not dispensed

T+5 days

₹100 per day beyond T+5

T is the day of the transaction. So a UPI payment that fails on a Monday should be back with you by end of Tuesday.

Three details in that circular that hardly anyone knows:

The ₹100 a day is automatic. The RBI's wording is that compensation must be credited to your account suo moto, meaning the bank has to pay it on its own without waiting for a complaint or a claim from you. In practice many banks do not. You are entitled to it either way.

It only covers failures that are not your fault. The circular defines a failed transaction as one that did not complete for a reason not attributable to the customer, like a communication link failing or a session timing out. A payment you cancelled, or one declined for insufficient balance, is not covered.

Domestic only. Both sender and receiver have to be in India.

What to do in the first thirty minutes

1. Do not repeat the payment. This is the mistake that turns one stuck amount into two. If the first one goes through later, you have paid twice, and getting the second one back is a much slower conversation.

2. Save the transaction ID. In the app, open the failed payment and note the UPI transaction ID, also shown as the reference number or RRN. Screenshot the whole screen. Every step after this needs that number, and app histories do get cleared.

3. Tap Check Status in the app. This is not a cosmetic button. It triggers NPCI's Unified Dispute and Issue Resolution system, which polls the banks involved for the real status and can force the reversal without a human being involved anywhere. NPCI keeps polling for up to five days if a bank does not respond.

4. Check whether UPI itself is having a bad day. Large UPI outages do happen. There were two inside one week in March 2025, with NPCI acknowledging that some banks were seeing declines and higher latency. If UPI is down right now or your own bank is, the failure is not about your account and retrying will not help.

5. Raise the complaint in the app. Every UPI app has to offer this. Open the transaction, choose the report or raise issue option, and file it. Do this on day one even though the money will probably come back on its own, because the ticket is what you need later if it does not.

If the money is not back by tomorrow

If your UPI payment failed more than a day ago and nothing has come back, work up the ladder in this order. Skipping steps wastes time because each level will ask whether you tried the one below.

  1. Your UPI app. Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and the rest all run in-app grievance channels. Give them the transaction ID and the date.

  2. Your bank. You are the bank's customer, and reversal is the bank's job, so this is where the responsibility actually sits. Not the receiver's bank, and not the shopkeeper.

  3. NPCI. File on the UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism page at npci.org.in, under What We Do, then UPI. You will need the transaction ID, bank name, amount, date and your registered mobile number. The UPI helpline is 1800 120 1740 and runs 24x7.

  4. Your bank's nodal or grievance officer, in writing, if there is still no movement. Quote the transaction ID and the circular number above, and ask specifically for the reversal plus the ₹100 per day compensation.

  5. RBI. If your bank has not resolved it 30 days after you complained, or the reply is unsatisfactory, file at cms.rbi.org.in under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. It is free, it is online, and the portal covers failed UPI transactions and non-reversal of charges by name.

Do note the 30 day clock starts from your complaint to the bank, not from the failed payment. So the sooner you get a written complaint on record with the bank, the sooner this door opens.

Why your UPI payment failed in the first place

Not to excuse it, but knowing why a UPI payment failed tells you whether to wait or act.

The receiving bank is struggling, not UPI. A UPI payment touches your app, your bank, NPCI and the receiver's bank. Any one of them can time out. This is why a payment to one person fails and the next one to somebody else goes through fine.

Peak load. Month end, salary day, the 1st, festival evenings. The infrastructure is under most strain exactly when everyone needs it.

Autopay windows. Since 1 August 2025, NPCI processes autopay mandates only in off-peak windows, before 10 am, between 1 pm and 5 pm, and after 9.30 pm. So a subscription debit may run earlier or later than you expect, which is not a failure.

Your own limits. Balance enquiries are capped at 50 a day now, and daily transfer limits apply per bank.

If several of these are ruled out and payments are failing for everyone around you, it is worth checking the live status for your bank or payments app before you spend an hour on hold. When reports are spiking across India, it is a wider outage and the only real fix is to wait.

Realistic timelines

Situation

What usually happens

Most failed UPI payments

Reversed within minutes, sometimes before you finish reading the alert

Reversal not instant

By end of the next day, per the RBI deadline

Bank misses that deadline

Money plus ₹100 for each extra day

Complaint raised with the bank

Bank has 30 days before you can go to the RBI Ombudsman

We are not going to promise you a number beyond this. Individual cases stall for reasons nobody outside the bank can see, which is exactly what the escalation ladder is for.

Before you go looking for a customer care number

This is where the second problem starts. Someone whose money is stuck searches for their bank's or payment app's helpline, calls the first number they find, and ends up talking to a fraudster who offers to fix the refund faster.

Every helpline number in our directory carries the month it was last verified and where it came from, and readers can mark whether the number actually connected when they called. That is the check we trust most, because it comes from people who dialled it this week.

Take the number from your bank's app, the back of your card or your account statement first. A directory should be your second stop, not your first.

Your money is almost certainly coming back on its own. The single most useful thing you can do in the meantime is keep that transaction ID somewhere safe and resist paying again.
